Austin is a 6 year old boy with an older brother Jayden (8) and a younger brother Gavin (9mo).  He loves to play soccer and baseball.
On January 13, he was sledding with his mom & brother Jayden.  Jayden wanted to go one more time before we left.  They both went down 1 more time but Austin ran into another small boy which triggered instant pain in his knee.  The following weekend, we went to Wisconsin Dells for Jayden’s hockey tournament.  After a day of playing at the water park, Austin was in extreme pain.  We took him to the ER where they took an x-ray. the dr gave us the best and worst case scenarios.  Immediately after that, we took him to an orthopedic dr who quickly sent us to Rush Hospital.  Dr. Gitelis quickly ordered an MRI and was able to get us in for a biopsy.  January 29, the day of the biopsy, our world crashed on us.  We were told Austin had Osteosarcoma, he would need chemotherapy and surgery.  February 4 we started chemotherapy for the 12 week journey.  At the end of March we met again with his surgeon, which then told us he recommended Rotationplasty to remove the tumor and to save as much of the leg so he would have a functioning knee.  After much research and other opinions, we scheduled surgery for May 9.  Since surgery, we have started chemotherapy up as well for another 18 weeks. Chemotherapy is tentatively scheduled to end around the beginning of October. Austin can’t wait for the hospital visits to end and to get his prosthetic to start playing the way he used to.
He has been an inspiration for us with his big smile through it all.
